Family Fun Ideas

Finding the small daily or weekly activities that could provide opportunities for quality, fun family time is priceless. These moments help the entire family remember how much fun it is to spend time together and make healthier choices as individuals and a family.

Look at your home, your routines and your schedules. What are your typical mornings, evenings and weekends like? What activities, rituals, and events take place? What kind of list comes to mind? Does it include routines like, getting up and going to work or school? Are you often dropping kids off or picking them up at various lessons and practices, or attending meetings for work or school?  What about the routines which keep your home running, such as cleaning, grocery shopping, preparing meals, cleaning up after meals, feeding or taking care of pets, paying bills, laundry, and other chores. Think of how you might turn some of these routine chores into something fun and active your family can do together. For example, each family member can take a turn packing sack lunches for the rest of the family – rotate this job each week.  Hold a family huddle before hand to discuss a variety of healthy lunch options and then create your grocery list together.

Have fun creating your menu of lunches.  Each family member will add their own twist. Some younger children may need help with preparing the meal, but may have the best lunch idea that week. Ask and listen to family members to create a fun lunch menu for everyone.

Another idea is to clean the house together as a family.  After all the chores are done set aside a time to celebrate your active day around the home.

Do you have ideas for creating family fun out of everyday routines? Please send your ideas to Susan so we can share them with our YMCA family.

Every Day is Earth Day Q & A

Q. What the heck is a Biophiliac?
A. A biophiliac is a person that loves life and all living things.

Dear Biophiliac
I have heard a lot about plastic bottles being bad for us. Is this true?

Wondering,
Sarah

Dear Sarah
There is, as with many questions these days, no completely simple answer to that. There are many different recipes of plastic, and each has specific properties. However, while I was surfing through the USDA web site in search of an answer, I came across research published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. The opening line is “Food and water containers may be a potential source of unwanted and possibly harmful chemicals.” They continue on to enlighten with many numbers and calculations, as do a number of other studies I looked at, and essentially find that, yes, potentially harmful chemicals do indeed migrate out of plastic and into our food and beverages. The various other studies that I looked at were variations on a theme – each studying the migration of different chemicals and different plastics. Ultimately, there is one thing for certain: some of the properties that belong to the plastic container do migrate into the contents of said container. What these properties are, the levels at which they migrate, and the suspected or known impacts on our health are all dizzying and differing stories. I say, err on the side of non-endocrine-disrupting caution and invest in a durable stainless steel or new and improved biphenyl (one of the controversial plastic migrators) Nalgene water bottle.

Our Q & A is brought to you by the Green Members of the Eugene Family YMCA. Do you have a question? E-mail Biophiliac

Health & Wellness Update

Health & Wellness Center – New Cardio Equipment
We’re fortunate here at the YMCA that we have the opportunity to install new cardio equipment into our Health & Wellness Center every three years. This summer, August 2009, we’ll be getting all new cardio equipment once again.  As you know, it feels so good to get a workout on new, smooth, cardio equipment; soon that sensation will be yours.  We’ll be getting all the usual toys….Treadmills, Upright Bikes, Recumbent Bikes, Ellipticals, Cybex ARC Trainers and Climbers.  The new ticket item that we are really excited for is the AMT (Adaptive Motion Trainer). Some of you may remember that we had a Demo AMT in our Y for a few weeks. If you were one of the lucky few to get on it and get a workout, you’ll be happy to learn we’ll be getting FOUR AMT’s.  Over the next several months please share with Y staff any questions or ideas about the room’s improvements. The installation time will be in late August so expect a week closure in Health & Wellness Center. The small break will be worth the wait – promise!

Health & Wellness Schedule
New to our summer schedule this year is ZUMBA. We are offering classes on
Tuesdays at 5:30pm & Fridays at 9:00am. Zumba is a fun cardio dance class that will get you shakin’, smiling and sweating all at the same time. Zumba combines Latin and International rhythms style of dance for an interval-based cardio dance workout. Absolutely, all levels of fitness and skill are encouraged to attend and all will have fun. Shoes are required so be sure to have proper foot wear on. Ditch the workout, come join the party!

It’s that time of the year when the sunshine comes out and people are drawn to the outdoors; when that happens we cut back some of our classes on the Health & Wellness Schedule. Our job is to do the best we can to balance what we offer with member’s use, sunshine, and staff’s availability. If you’ve checked the summer schedule and seen that there are fewer classes in the summer, you’re right. Don’t fret though, your favorite class will more then likely return in the fall along with more great offerings. Thank you for enjoying the programs and classes we offer.

YMCA Staff
This winter/spring the Eugene Family YMCA staff was offered the opportunity to participate in an all-staff wellness challenge. Our of our 160 staff, 35 staff completed the 3-month, wellness challenge. Each month staff had to participate in four hours of healthy activity that happened at the YMCA. Activities included playing tennis, helping with the preschool swim lessons, trying out deep water aerobics, going to a Pilates class, getting a workout with Tom, lifting weights and using cardio machines and many more creative ideas. The purpose of the challenge was to get staff moving and to enjoy our facility. The challenge was a huge success and we’re proud of our staff who participated.  We’ll do another staff challenge next year and hopefully we’ll get more staff involved!
