DIVISION 1, HERE SHE COMES!

The Eugene Y’s own Ellie Grossman recently signed her Letter of Intent to play division 1 tennis at Southern Miss University. She is receiving a full ride scholarship to play tennis for the Golden Eagles of Southern Miss.

In the last nine years there have only been 2 other Eugene players to receive a division one tennis scholarship. Ellie's personal coach and Y Tennis Pro, Mike Kingsley was one of them.

We are all very proud of Ellie and her accomplishments in tennis. In December Ellie will be returning to the Y from the John Newcombe Tennis Academy. Please tell her congratulations and wish her good luck on her upcoming college tennis!

YES YOU CAN

Diabetes Prevention
One out of every three Americans will be diabetic by 2050.
Are you one of them? You don’t have to be. You can take control now.
“I've made many changes in my eating habits since starting the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program. I snack less often. My portions are smaller. I'm eating more vegetables. It is good to know that I don't have to be perfect, and I can still reduce my risk. Being in a program that works makes the cravings manageable.”

A GREAT START

Morning Workout Class
Our 6 week trial of “Y Morning Workout” was a success.  You showed us that you enjoyed the class and so we are adding it to the rest of the Fall Schedule.

If you haven’t been yet, this is a total body workout that combines cardio, strength and stretching.  Working major muscle groups, core training and active stretching sure beats that extra cup of coffee to get your day started.

Jump start your mornings with us:

WHAT'S UP WITH THE NEW YS?

Two New Ys—Still in the Works
Although the movement is slow and the setbacks have been many, we still have reason to be optimistic about developing Y facilities on the Civic site. Conversations continue with 4J and with new leadership in the district, we are witnessing renewed attention to this opportunity for our community to do something great on that site. We still plan to conduct our feasibility study soon after the start of the new year; to do so, we need to know where we will be building, so we are pushing for a speedy resolution to the current conversations. Stay tuned… and keep the faith: there will be a new Y here in South Eugene!

And in Bethel. Accommodating a Y in the parkland adjacent to MeadowView School requires a change to the City’s Master Plan, which is a process that the City is well into, but has a ways to go. They are halfway through the public meeting and input phase, having hosted two public meetings and distributed and reviewed two surveys. Two more meetings and surveys are scheduled for the first quarter of 2012 and then, assuming green lights, the application for a Conditional Use Permit (CUP) begins and is ideally approved and resolved by the end of 2012. We are working with an exceptional and dedicated City staff team, who are diligent and thoughtful about the feedback they are receiving from Bethel neighbors. They are neutral partners—neither in favor nor opposed to the Y project itself, yet their ability to collect, analyze, and respond to data is certainly a tremendous benefit to our ability to best serve the Bethel area.

THANK YOU AND FAREWELL

It is with a bit of sadness for our Y that I announce Darryl Wisner has taken the Head Pro position at Eugene Swim and Tennis Center. We'll miss Darryl, but we are also very excited for him! Darryl has been a great mentor, leader, friend to me—and all of us at the Y. When you see him again, be sure to give him a hug and a thank you. Wish him well on his new adventure!

We will be working on the staffing schedule at the Tennis Center—I’ll keep you updated as to what is going on.

Take care Darryl!  Have fun!
