Why in the World Tennis

What is Why in the World Tennis? It is the Y's version of Team Tennis, a coed tennis league played with a unique team format. Each match consists of five sets. Each set is composed of a different type of tennis (men's singles, men's doubles, women's singles, women's doubles, and mixed doubles). Coaches, before the match, decide the order in which the sets will be played. Each player on a team usually plays in at least one of the five sets.

Sound fun? It is and we'd like you to try it out at our "Why in the World Tennis Try It" night. May 25th from 6:45 until close. Everyone is invited to participate, no team pre-organization required. Just bring your racquet and your sense of adventure!

Reminder! The "Try It" will replace Fun and Fitness and Match Makers on Wednesday, May 25th.

If you want to check out the rules before you try it, please take a look here.

Fun Facts

The latest data from the Physical Activity Council (PAC) shows participation in the sport grew  46% from 2000 through 2010, making tennis by far the fastest growing traditional participation sport in the U.S. for the past decade.

Tennis Trivia Answers

1. In tennis, the ad court is the left side of the court for each player, and the deuce court is the right side of the court for each player.

2. "Love" is generally taken as being derived from the French "l"oeuf", the egg, symbolizing nothing. The term "love" can also be said to come from the English phrase "neither for love nor for money", indicating nothing.

3. Throwing his racket.

By methodically bouncing
the ball at least ten times
before your serves.

USTA’s adult leagues are just finishing.  The Y had men’s and women’s 4.0, 3.5 teams and one 3.0 women’s team.  The season ends in two more weeks, but the teams have had fun and been successful.

The women’s 3.5 team is currently in first place and will go to play-offs in Salem June 4-5; the other teams are still competing.

June23-29 will be the senior/super senior/70+ sectionals in Sunriver.  The 70+ league is brand new to Southern Oregon and there are five teams competing this season.  Four of the teams come from the Y.
Jean Richie is captain of a 6.0 team;
Richard Clark—6.0 men;
Nancy Blickenstaff—7.0 women;
Dick Mulligin and Ray Hull—7.0 men.
All of these teams will go and compete at sectionals.  Congratulations to these captains and to the new league.  It proves that tennis is a life-time sport.

The senior and super senior leagues will play in the fall for the 2012 season, and it is not too early to begin planning for those leagues.

Thank you for being part of the
Y's Tennis Center.

See you on the courts!
