Why QuickStart Tennis?

 10 and Under Tennis
featuring the
QuickStart Tennis Play Format

It’s a whole new ball game for kids tennis! With equipment and courts tailored to suit their needs and abilities, kids will feel confident as soon as they pick up a racquet.

Using the QuickStart Tennis format allows kids to rally back and forth over the net right away and enjoy the game right from the start. You’d never send your 8 yearold out with adult-sized equipment to a full-sized baseball field or basketball court, so why do that on a tennis court?

Your Y is excited to offer the QuickStart Tennis program to our 10 and under players. Our teaching staff, program design and equipment are all come together to make tennis a fun experience that will allow players to develop skills, confidence and community.

If you have questions, please just ask!

Jr's at Drop-ins and Mixers

Our Drop-ins and Mixers are designed for those 15 and older, ensuring that these programs are safe and level appropriate. For those under 15, lead staff consent is required, each time. If you are under 15 and would like to play, please check in with the lead staff when you arrive and they will let you know if there is an opportunity for you to play.

Jr's looking for the opportunity to play are encouraged to check out Family Fun and Fitness and the Jr. Pizza and Play on Fridays. If you have questions about what other programs are appropriate, please talk to one of our Tennis Staff. We are happy to help you find more ways to play Tennis.

Happy New Year!

Connie's Corner

Senior and Super Senior USTA leagues finished the first week in January.  The one team going to sectionals in June will be the men’s 3.0 captained by Richard Clark.  Nancy Blickenstaff’s 3.5 team came in second in their league and got to the first round of play-offs.  The rest of the teams were in the middle of the leagues and did well in representing the Y.

January starts senior mixed doubles and there are three teams represented by the Y:
John Bridgens is the captain of the 6.0 mixed,
Sue Fleming is the captain of the 7.0 mixed, and Roger Schaljo is the captain of the 8.0.

The adult league season begins the end of February as well.  There will be a new league beginning in Southern Oregon starting in January as well.  This league will be the 70+ league, anyone 70 currently or turning 70 in 2011 is eligible for this league.  It is 6.0, 7.0, and 8.0.  It looks like we will have a men’s  6.0 and a men’s and women’s 7.0 league from the YMCA.  This league is looser in its requirements than the other leagues.  A team can advance immediately to sectionals if there are no other teams in the area to play.  If anyone is interested in playing on any team in the senior mixed, adult, or 70+ league , please leave your name and e-mail address at the main desk, and someone will contact you.  Happy New Year.  cjc

Resolution Revolution!

Chances are, at some time in your life, you've made a New Year's Resolution -- and then broken it. This year, stop the cycle of resolving to make change, but then not following through. If your resolution is to take better care of yourself, you'll have a much better year if your resolution sticks. Here are 5 tips to help get you started.
1 Be realistic  If your goal feels attainable, you are more likely to do the work to make it happen. Go ahead, set yourself up for success.
2 Make a Plan   Think it through. What is your first step. Decide how you will deal with the barriers that will come your way. This could include calling on a friend for help, practicing positive thinking and self-talk.
3 Talk about it   Don't keep your resolution a secret. Tell friends and family members so they can be there to support your resolve.  Consider having a wellness buddy.
4 Track your progress   Keep track of each small success you make toward reaching your larger goal. Short-term goals are easier to keep, and small accomplishments will help keep you motivated
5 Be kind to yourself   Do the best you can, and take each day one at a time.

We spend January 1 walking through our lives, room by room, drawing up a list of work to be done, cracks to be patched.
Maybe this year, to balance the list, we ought to walk through the rooms of our lives... not looking for flaws, but for potential.

New TAC Members

Before I introduce our new TAC (Tennis Advisory Council) members, I'd should like to thank 2 members of committee who's terms have ended.

Roger Schaljo TAC President and Janise Augar have been on the TAC for many years. Both have given their time and energy, not just to make the the Tennis Center better, but to make the Y better. With their care, both things were accomplished. Thank you to both of you for all your work.

Our newest members include Jerry Trapp, Saylor Smith, Karen Zeross-Smith and Esther Celis. This is an exciting time for the Y and the Tennis Center and these new committee members will be a huge help in moving forward.

Other members of the TAC include Eben Fodor, Alan Schwake, Susan Heisey, Dick Clark, Bill Flinn, and Dave Thomas.

Thanks to all of you for the difference you make.

DAY

O

THE

DUCK!

From Dave
Happy New Year, Y Friends!

This coming 2011 year is going to be an exhilarating one here at the Y. We’ll be helping people manage their chronic conditions, supporting others in preventing disease, teaching thousands of children to be safe and have fun in water, providing hundreds of families with nurturing, affordable child care, teaching character values through team and individual youth sports, and providing a place that all people can rely on for support in their journey to wellness. And then, we’ll do it again the next day.

While we continue to live our cause and build the foundations of a strong community every day, there will be much happening behind the scenes which will launch our Y into a new era and facilities that will serve our community for generations to come. On February 1st, we will submit a proposal to the 4J School Board, requesting their approval for the purchase of the Civic Stadium site. We will send you all an executive summary of this final proposal at that time; attached here is an abbreviated preview of the vision and an outline of the plans we have for that site. We ask that you please take a moment to read this, as we are noticing an increased awareness and curiosity about our Y’s future. If questions come your way, it will be helpful if we all are communicating the same message.

If you are reading this, we consider you an integral member of our Y family; one that we will be engaging on any number of different levels as our work and mission lead us into an era of growth and continued, exceptional service to our community.

Thank you for all you do. As always, your insights and questions are welcomed. Just e-mail, call or talk to me at the Y.
