Celebrate El Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead),
a Mexican tradition to remember and honor the dead.
El Día de los Muertos is a time to remember family and friends who have died. It is not a sad tradition; it is a festive time to remember and honor the dead. Traditionally, families build and decorate ofrendas (decorated altars) in their homes for loved ones who have died.
Day of the Dead altars have many traditional elements, including: candles, marigolds, photos, sugar or ceramic skulls (calaveras), water, food and cut paper decorations called papel picado.
This year, El Día de los Muertos is celebrated on November 1 and 2.
Honor Your Loved Ones
Stop by our Y community ofrenda in the Don Stathos Campus Welcome Center between October 26 to November 2, to write a name, message or memory of a deceased loved one you would like to honor on a calavera card! While you're there, we encourage you to take a moment to appreciate the ofrenda and share a story about your loved ones with another member of our community. We would like to thank our community partner, Maude Kerns Art Center, for their support and guidance in helping us create our Y's Día de los Muertos Community Ofrenda! Maude Kerns Art Center is hosting its 33rd annual Día de los Muertos exhibit featuring artwork, community altars, and a special Day of the Dead Gift Shop. The exhibit is on display October 16, through November 6.
