Babysitter's Training 
Learning to Care for Youth

Who: Anyone ages 11+ (adults welcome too!) 
Cost: $130 for Members | $140 for Community Members
When: Jan. 10 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. 

In this Red Cross Babysitter Training, participants will learn to: 

  • Supervise children and infants
  • Perform basic child-care skills such as diapering, feeding, and dressing
  • Choose safe, age-appropriate games and toys
  • Identify safety hazards and prevent injuries
  • Care for common injuries such as burns, cuts, and bee stings
  • Communicate effectively with parents
  • Find and interview for babysitting jobs

Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) Training

Becoming a Lifeguard Leader

Who: Those 17 years and older, who are able to pass the Prerequisite Skill Assessment & Skill Practice and Polish Session
Cost: $295 for Members | $315 for Community Members
Note: If you don't pass the
Prerequisite Skill Assessment & Skill Practice and Polish Session, the cost is refundable, minus the $50 testing fee.

Friday, Feb. 20 from 5:45 to 9 p.m. meet in the YMCA Lobby
Saturday, Feb. 21 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Sunday, Feb. 22 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor course is to provide class participants with the skills necessary to teach the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course. Upon successful completion of this course, you will receive a Lifeguarding Instructor Certification valid for 2 years. LGI Candidates also need to:

  • Possess a current American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED
  • Complete online Pre-Coursework prior to Feb. 20
  • Successfully Complete Pre-Course Skill Evaluation

Are you whistle-worthy?

Who: Those 15 years and older, who are able to pass the Lifeguarding Swim-Tread-Swim Sequence
Cost: $175 for Members | $195 for Community Members
Note: If you don't pass the
Lifeguarding Swim-Tread-Swim Sequence, the cost is refundable, minus the $50 testing fee.
Dates & Class Times: 

Friday, March 20 from 5:45 to 9 p.m. meet in the YMCA Lobby
Saturday, March 21 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Sunday, March 22 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will receive the following Red Cross certifications, valid for 2 years:

  • Lifeguarding
  • First Aid
  • CPR and AED

Before the in-person course begins, participants must complete the Online Prerequisite Course. Please plan to complete the online coursework (6-8 hours) at least 2 days prior to your first in-person session.

All candidates must successfully complete the Lifeguarding Swim-Tread-Swim Sequence, which will will occur on the first day of the course at 5:45 p.m. and require that you:

  1.  Swim 150 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both.
    • Swimming on the back or side is not permitted.
    • Swim goggles are allowed.
  2. Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs.
  3. Swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both.
  4. Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds, which includes:
    • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards; face may be in or out of the water, swim goggles are not allowed.
    • Surface dive (feet-first or head-first) to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
    • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands, and keeping the face at or near the surface.
    • Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

Missing class time:
You must be present for all planned hours of this course. Do not plan on missing any class time. If you know you are going to miss a whole day of class or more, please do not enroll in this course. If you have to miss an hour or two for an appointment, you must make arrangements with the course organizer. Depending on what material you’ll be missing, this may or may not be acceptable. You will be held responsible for learning and practicing the material missed on your own time.
