Who: Those 15 years and older, who are able to pass the Pre-Course Swim Test
Cost: $150 for Members /$160 for Community Members
Please Note: If you don't pass the Pre-Course Swim Test, fee is refundable, minus $50 testing fee.

Class Times:
Fridays: 5:45pm-9:00pm - Meet in the YMCA Lobby
Saturdays: 9:00am-5:00pm
Sundays: 9:00am-5:00pm

The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is to provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies.  Participants will also learn how to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries, and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services personnel take over.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will receive:

  • Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED Certification valid for 2 years

All Candidates must successfully complete the Lifeguarding Swim-Tread-Swim Sequence:

  •  Swim 150 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. - Swimming on the back or side is not permitted. - Swim goggles are allowed.
  • Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs.
  • Swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both.
  • Timed Event Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
    • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. - The face may be in or out of the water. - Swim goggles are not allowed.
    • Surface dive (feet-first or head-first) to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
    • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping the face at or near the surface.
    • Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

Lifeguarding Swim-Tread-Swim Sequence Evaluation will occur on the 1st day of the course at 5:45pm

Online Prerequisite Course Info: We are excited to offer you American Red Cross Lifeguarding Blended Learning. Blended learning combines online learning with on-site skills sessions where you will practice skills and demonstrate competency. Please plan to complete the initial online lessons of your training at least two days prior to your first on-site skills.   

Missing Class Time:
You must be present all planned hours of this course.  Do not plan on missing any class time.  If you know you are going to miss a whole day of class or more, please do not enroll in this course.  If you have to miss an hour or two for an appointment, you must make arrangements with me.  Depending on what material you’ll be missing, this may or may not be acceptable.  You will be held responsible for learning and practicing the material missed on your own time.
