Esteban Camacho Steffensen is a Costa Rican/Oregonian muralist with 17 years of experience creating murals in the Northwest to inspire the public with images of the natural world. His compositions emphasize endangered species, ecosystem relationships, and cultural reflection to encourage action to protect the world we love. He paints dynamic landscapes which attract the public to get close and discover details, while also experiencing a sense of connection to the action depicted.
His artistic work also focuses on creating murals through community engagement. He has dedicated himself to mentoring youth and emerging artists using a community-based process of making public murals since 2005, when he painted the wall in the Y's pool!
His mural displayed on the Art for All Wall depicts the give and take relationship we have with the ocean. As humans add excess into the atmosphere and oceans, we ultimately strip it and change its natural chemical makeup in a process called ocean acidification which is illustrated in the molecules spiraling from the shells. It can be difficult to sympathize with something that takes effort to see. The mural is the result of his experience with students seeing and assisting first hand with scientific field work, which included catching over 60 stingrays and living with a coastal community in Guanacaste, Costa Rica.
